When you decide to remodel your home, there a ton of things you can do yourself. Granite installation and resealing are just some to name a few. If you are planning to reseal your granite countertop all by yourself, make sure that you get some advice with your granite manufacturer/dealer. There are granite countertops that need resealing after six months to two years but there are those that do not. Resealing is important to retain the color and clarity of certain granite tops. Be sure that the sealer is non-toxic and perhaps child-safe (if you have kids). Also determine how frequently you use the granite countertop. High traffic area tops require more care than those with low traffic, for example.

There are two types of sealers available in the market. These are penetrating sealer and topical sealer. The penetrating sealer penetrates into the stone. It protects the structure of natural stone and can be absorbed by granite in three to four minutes. You need to apply a second coat to properly re-seal it after two hours from the first application. The other type of sealer is topical sealer. Unlike the penetrating sealer, it coats the top of the counter’s surface only. It will form a film that is designed to protect the top surface and is not able to penetrate through the stone. It is made from natural wax, acrylic and other plastic compounds.

Topical sealers may come in two forms, strippable and permanent. Strippable sealers are made to be stripped or removed from the stone easily, just as it’s named. Just be sure that you read the label and have gotten the right advice before using it. The other type is the permanent topical sealer. This type of topical sealer is very difficult to remove after it has been applied on the countertop’s surface. It is made of solvent or water based polymers which is the reason why it is not recommended for granite countertops.
